3D print post-processing — from raw print to finished part

Support removal, sanding, painting, resin curing and dimensional finishing for functional and presentation parts.

A raw print is not always the end of manufacturing. Depending on its purpose and process, the part may need support removal, sanding, joining, painting, resin washing, post-curing or dimensional finishing.

Define the required result first

A workshop fixture, presentation enclosure and bearing housing need different treatment. Before finishing, decide whether the priority is safe edges, visible surface quality, dimensional fit, paint preparation, cleanability or preservation of fine detail.

A sensible FFF/FDM sequence

  1. Remove supports and excess material with suitable tools.
  2. Clean edges and check that thin features remain intact.
  3. Sand gradually, moving from coarse to finer abrasives.
  4. Remove dust and inspect critical dimensions.
  5. Fill larger imperfections if the part will be painted.
  6. Apply primer, refine the surface and then add colour.

Support the part while sanding and avoid excessive pressure. Several controlled passes are safer than trying to remove every layer line at once.

Washing and curing SLA parts

Post-processing is mandatory for resin printing. Uncured resin must be removed according to the material requirements, followed by controlled final curing.

Under-processing can leave the surface and properties incomplete. Excessive or unsuitable curing is not neutral either; time and conditions should follow the exact resin guidance. Remove supports in an order that protects fine edges and small features.

Finish functional dimensions deliberately

A hole for a fastener, shaft or bearing may need drilling or reaming. Threads can be printed at a suitable scale, tapped afterwards or replaced with an insert. A flat datum can be finished, but the design should include material allowance for the operation.

Joining split models

Splitting a model can reduce supports and improve orientation, but the joint should be designed. Locating pins, lap joints and guiding faces make assembly repeatable. Select adhesive around the material, load and required appearance.

For painted parts, a seam can be filled and sanded. A technical assembly may instead need mechanical retention, reliable positioning or future disassembly.

Painting step by step

  1. Remove supports and level seams.
  2. Degrease with a material-compatible method.
  3. Apply a thin compatible primer coat.
  4. Inspect under side lighting and correct defects.
  5. Apply several thin colour coats rather than one heavy coat.
  6. Allow full drying time before assembly.

Mask fits, threads and adhesive faces. Primer and paint add thickness, which matters around tight assemblies.

When professional finishing is worthwhile

Define finishing during quoting when the part is visible, mates with another component or serves as a presentation prototype. State colour, gloss, critical tolerances and surfaces that must remain untouched.

It is also valuable when material response is uncertain or several parts need a repeatable appearance.
